Lightmatters Presents: Mark Huges

Mark Hughes is an Edmonton based pet photographer (fureverphotos.ca) known for his ability to capture the unique personalities and heartfelt moments of pets with over a decade of experience in the field. He has long volunteered as a photographer for the Edmonton Humane Society and the greater Edmonton animal rescue society (GEARS). His photographs have helped many animals find their forever homes. Mark combines his passion for animals with his artistic eye to create stunning, memorable portraits. Before diving into pet photography, Mark had a successful career as a business owner and forensic engineer, where Mark started a niche engineering business and grew it into the largest (and first national) forensic engineering firm in Canada. He retired from engineering in 2019 to focus on his photography exclusively. His work has earned him a dedicated following among pet owners who cherish his ability to turn fleeting moments into timeless treasures. Mark’s approachable demeanor and patience ensure a comfortable experience for both pets and their owners, making every photoshoot a joyful and rewarding experience.

In this presentation, attendees will be introduced to the world of pet photography, exploring the work of famous pet photographers and gaining a comprehensive overview of the field. The session will cover key considerations unique to photographing animals. From behaviour management to capturing personality, as well as a pet-specific business approach to marketing and client engagement. Participants will also learn how to set up a successful pet photography mini-sessions. Culminating in a live demonstration of professional techniques in action.

Railene Hooper

Railene is a passionate portrait artist specializing in capturing the genuine connections and unique stories of the people she photographs. With a keen eye for detail and an artist touch, she masterfully brings out personalities in her portraits. Her inspiration stems from the individual stories of her subjects, making sure they spring to life through her lens.

This will be a presentation focused on photographing couples with depth and authenticity. We’ll explore how to create meaningful images that truly reflect the couple’s connection and story. Learn the value of preparation and flexibility in delivering unforgettable photos that resonate deeply with your clients.

Robert Bray

Lightmatters Presents: Robert Bray

Robert Bray MPA, is one of Canada’s most celebrated photographers. He has been awarded Canadian Portrait Photographer of the Year 3 times, and has the distinction of winning Alberta’s Portrait Photographer of the Year 6 times. He recieved his Master of Photographic Arts Degree from the Professional Photographers of Canada in 1989. Some of Robert’s work is exhibited in Canada’s National Archives and graces walls in the homes and offices of business leaders, sports celebrities, and everyday families. In 2007, he was awarded the coveted Yousuf Karsh award by the PPOC. In 2005, Robert was commissioned by the Government of Canada to photograph Queen Elizabeth for Canada’s official royal portrait.

Crystal is an intention driven portrait photographer, strategizing to tell stories that showcase the incredible people she gets to photograph in ways that have the ability to enhance their impact. Her desire to create powerful strategic visual messaging has propelled her to consistently collaborate and learn so every day she can do better work than the day before. Crystal is incredibly passionate about helping entrepreneurs identify their own strengths that differentiate them within their industry: especially photographers.

Are you ready to be more intentional about the business and intentional design of your photography? Crystal will lead a demo and discussion on the specific tricks for effective high end headshot sessions, as well as how photographers can use this thinking in their own business planning. The session will span planning, lighting, posing, and the value added conversations that will inspire each participant to explore their own unique value propositions. Crystal works with her clients to improve their SEO, and the way they think about their public relations, and will model this live.

Becky Fleury

Lightmatters Presents: Becky Fleury

Becky is an international award-winnign photographer who specializes in fine art portraiture. She is PPOC’s 2022 Portrait Photographer of the Year and Prairie Region’s current Photographer of the Year. She has taken the honour of Group Portrait of the Year three times at the national level and has had five images honoured in PPOC’s Loan Collection – featuring Canada’s top imagery for that year. In addition to Becky Fleury Photography, Becky is also the owner of Art for Athletes – a sports division that offers a creative spin on sports portraits for athletes and teams. Becky always thrives to keep things fresh and to push her professional and creative boundaries.

During this presentation, Becky will share her process for creating group portraits that stand out among the rest. Becky will break down her methodology to styling, lighting, composition, connection, and post processing. She will share how she used her life’s experiences to capture the energy of her subjects and to portray story telling her images. Whether you shoot families, weddings, commercial, or fine art groups, you are sure to take away some valuable tools to achieve excellence in your next group portrait.

Eugene Erick

As a rodeo events and lifestyle photographer with a deep-rooted passion for animals and the untamed spirit of the rodeo. Eugene has spent decades capturing the raw energy and unbridled emotion of the western lifestyle. As a seasoned photographer with years of experience behind the lens, he has honed the craft of telling stories through powerful images that resonate with authenticity and heart. Eugene sees the world through a lens of compassion and adventure.

Saturday: 3:00pm - 4:00pm

Rodeo photography will cover key aspects such as capturing the intensity of rodeo events through action, timing, and emotion. It will discuss essential gear, including cameras with fast autofocus, telephoto lenses, and proper settings like shutter speed and aperture. The presentation highlights the importance of timing, working with challenging lighting, and maintaining safety while shooting, post-processing tips, iconic rodeo photos, and a summary of the art and challenges of rodeo photography will conclude the presentation. Inspiring photographers to capture the thrill of the rodeo.
